Liberation

Liberation

This was recorded in the Massachusetts Correction Facilities in Norfolk, MA back around 1981. The band was 4 inmates, bass, drums, guitar and lead singer with everyone singing backup. Andy Pratt was producing. We had an 8 hour window, once we arrived at the prison, to load in enough equipment to create an 8 track 1/2″ recording studio (Tascam, no dolby), have everything searched by the prison guards, portage everything to a smallish hall with stage, set up the ‘studio’, get sounds, record 5 songs (all first takes except for two takes on ‘Jesus Is Love’) and finish up before the band had to report back to their cells. The songs and performances are the real deal with Feeling. Enjoy.

(These mixes were found on a white, no-label cheapo cassette that was used for quick reference mixes back at Perfect Crime Studios in Watertown, MA where I worked at the time. It’s impressive that cassette tape bought in bulk has endured so well after 40 years. I’m also happy to still have a Nakamichi DR-1 cassette deck. Still works as if new. Too bad digital recording is so convenient and analog tape recording is so … not.)
